5th National Conference Supporting Creative Industries

Despite impressive industry growth, graduates are still struggling to find work in the creative and cultural sectors. Employers still feel that graduates are leaving Higher Education without the right skills to succeed, and HEIs still feel that students are arriving without the necessary skills to get the most out of their courses.

This conference will bring together thought leaders from government, industry and education to get information about the latest creative industry skills needs and discover new opportunities for collaboration in support of them.

Delegates at the conference will:

  • Review progression routes in to the creative and cultural industries and the role FE and HE can play
  • Learn how FE and HE institutions can contribute more to the creative economy through supporting the development of new business models
  • Get the latest on digital developments in the creative industries and the contribution education can make
  • Receive practical guidance on work placements for students, and how they can get involved with employers in the creative sector
  • Discuss the latest research on creative graduate destination data
  • David Worthington, Acting Chairman, Creative & Cultural Skills
  • Elizabeth Rouse, Pro-Rector, University of the Arts London (UAL)
  • Professor Stuart Bartholomew, Principal, Arts University College at Bournemouth
  • David Clews, Co-Director, Higher Education Academy Art Design Media Subject Centre
  • Jeremy Davenport, Deputy Director, Creative Industries Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN)
  • Professor Elaine Thomas, Vice-Chancellor, University for the Creative Arts (UCA)
  • Professor Jonathan Briggs, Professor of eCommerce, Kingston University and Founder, Hyper Island

Applications Now Welcomed for The Pitch 2010

Entries are now being invited for The Pitch 2010.

The Pitch is an annual competition which aims to find the UK's most exciting and innovative small companies and entrepreneurial talent.  Entrants must pitch their business idea to a panel of industry experts who will scrutinise business concepts and presentation skills, searching for the best of the best.

Successful entrepreneurs will be chosen from five regions to present their product or service, with five winners plus a wildcard entry selected to go through to a live grand final in London.  Business ideas may be in any field; however, the judges will assess all pitches by looking for innovation, engagement with customers, sound financial and business planning, and an understanding of where the opportunities exist in the market for the product or service.

In 2009, the winning entrepreneur received a package of business support prizes worth £50,000.  For 2010, Sift Media has announced that it aims to compile a larger and more comprehensive package for the winner, which is to be announced in due course.  Every entrant who takes part in The Pitch will receive expert advice on their business idea, guidance on their business plan and access to a range of business resources available from The Business Factory website.  Each finalist will also receive extensive media coverage.

To enter, businesses must be based in the UK, established for less than three years at the time of entry and employ no more than 20 members of staff.

The deadline for entries to The Pitch 2010 is 15 June 2010.

The contest will fully begin after this date, with regional heats being held in Bristol, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Birmingham and London on the following dates:

  • Bristol: 21 June 2010.
  • Liverpool: 1 July 2010.
  • London: 15 July 2010.
  • Edinburgh: 29 July 2010.
  • Birmingham: 5 August 2010.

Invitation to Business Launch of ADVANCE

We would be delighted if you could join us to launch ADVANCE, an exciting and unique modular programme for young entrepreneurs in the Shropshire area.  The event will be on Monday 22 February at 5.30pm in the Glass Classroom at Enginuity, Coalbrookdale.

ADVANCE is a brand new concept developed by the Ironbridge Gorge Museums that is attracting national and international interest and is designed to support entrepreneurial skills through the lens of creativity and innovation in business practice.  It offers young people the opportunity to build a creative business idea or expand on an already existing product or service and we believe it has the potential to be life changing for the industries and individuals involved.

This free programme will be taught by leading industry experts and practising innovators and there will be the potential for course participants to secure investment to take their ideas forward and to work with industry and business partners.  We also hope this will be an excellent opportunity for Shropshire business networking.

We do hope you can join us for the event and look forward to seeing you there. If you are unable to attend please feel free to send a representative of your company.

An understanding of commerce, strong interpersonal skills and a can-do attitude are important - also unwavering integrity, as you will be responsible for maintaining the reputation of a respected and established brand. Our clients are varied in terms of sector, location and size and the nature of the work we do for them is wide ranging.

Some hands-on design or artwork skills will be an advantage as the manager will be responsible for initiation and production of key projects; however, management and scheduling skills are more important. Applicants with business development skills will also be considered.

STAND AND DELIVER? ……… NO THANKS!

As a newly formed club Shropshire Speakers invites and welcomes new members from all over the county.
Having to stand up and deliver a presentation or speech, whether at work or a social event, is, for many, the number one fear in life.

Research shows that 71% of business leaders and an even higher percentage of the general public are terrified of speaking in front of a group of people. The fear of getting it wrong, forgetting your words, or being
boring can be overwhelming.

Well, help is at hand!
Whether you have to give presentations at work, speak to a group, deliver a speech at a wedding or simply want to increase your confidence, Shropshire Speakers Club provides you with the opportunity to develop your speaking and presenting skills.

You can learn the art of presenting, speaking and listening in a structured but warm and friendly environment. You are given support and feedback as you are guided step-by-step through the process of making a successful speech or presentation.

The club offers a supportive playground to build your confidence and practice your speaking skills with encouragement and constructive feedback.

Meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month at 7.15pm at the Grays Inn Hotel in Telford just 1 minute off junction 5 of the M54 (eastbound). Just turn up at any meeting or for further details contact Alan Adams on 07980 222 441 or David Brookes on 01743 355099
